What the everyday and shopping calculators do

This plot holds the small sums that come up in ordinary life and never seem worth opening a spreadsheet for. There are three clusters. Money at the till covers tips, percentages, discounts, VAT, sales tax and unit price. Running costs covers fuel, MPG, electricity and subscriptions, which are the recurring numbers people underestimate. Dates and time covers your exact age, the gap between two dates, a countdown, the duration between two clock times and a weekly hours total.

The shopping tools are built around comparison rather than a single answer. Unit price exists because a bigger pack is not reliably cheaper and the shelf label is not always comparing like with like. The discount calculator adds sales tax on top of the reduction, so the number you see is the number at the till. The pizza size calculator is the same idea applied to area, which is where most people's intuition fails, because a 16 inch pizza is not a third bigger than a 12 inch, it is close to twice the food.

Nothing in this category needs an account or a sign-up, every page lands with a worked default already filled in, and the result updates as you type rather than waiting for a submit button. The date tools handle leap years and month lengths properly, so counting from 31 January behaves the way a calendar does rather than the way naive arithmetic does.

Adding and removing UK VAT at the 20 percent standard rate

The single most common VAT mistake is taking 20 percent off a gross price to get back to the net. That undershoots, because the 20 percent was added to the smaller number. To remove VAT you divide by 1.2; to add it you multiply by 1.2. This table is the arithmetic the VAT calculator performs.

Net, before VATVAT at 20%Gross, including VAT
10.002.0012.00
50.0010.0060.00
100.0020.00120.00
250.0050.00300.00
500.00100.00600.00
1,000.00200.001,200.00

Read the table right to left to strip VAT out: a gross 120 contains 20 of VAT and 100 of net, not 96, which is what subtracting 20 percent would wrongly give. The UK also has a 5 percent reduced rate on things like domestic energy and child car seats, and a 0 percent rate on most food, books and children's clothes. The VAT calculator handles all three.

Frequently asked questions

How do I take VAT off a price?

Divide the gross price by 1.2 at the 20 percent standard rate, or by 1.05 at the reduced rate. Subtracting 20 percent from the gross is the common error and gives a number that is too low: 120 divided by 1.2 is 100, while 120 minus 20 percent is 96.

Which calculator adds up hours between two times?

Use the time duration calculator for the plain gap between two times, including one that crosses midnight. Use the hours calculator for a work shift, because it deducts an unpaid break, converts the result to the decimal hours a timesheet wants and prices the shift at your hourly rate.

Do the shopping calculators work outside the UK?

The percentage, discount, unit price, tip and pizza size tools are currency-agnostic, so any currency works. The VAT calculator uses UK rates and the sales tax calculator is built for US-style rates added at the till, so pick whichever matches where you are buying.
