How the age calculator works
This calculator finds your exact age by comparing your date of birth with today's date. It counts the number of full years first, then the remaining whole months, then the leftover days, borrowing from the previous month when the day of the month has not yet been reached. It also totals every day and week between the two dates.
Because the totals are based on the real calendar distance between the two dates, leap days are counted automatically. There is nothing to configure: pick a birth date and the breakdown appears.
How to use the age calculator
- Pick your date of birth using the date field.
- Read your exact age expressed as years, months and days.
- Check the total days and total weeks lived underneath.
Worked examples
Someone born on 1 January 1990
Inputs: Date of birth 1 January 1990, calculated on 3 June 2026.
Result: An age of 36 years, 5 months and 2 days, which works out to 13,302 total days and 1,900 full weeks lived.
A recent birthday
Inputs: A birth date a few days before today.
Result: An age of 0 years, 0 months and a small number of days, useful for working out a newborn's age in days.
Limitations and common mistakes
Edge cases and limitations
- The calculation uses your device clock and local date, so around midnight or across time zones the day count can shift by one.
- You cannot pick a date in the future. The field is capped at today, since a future birth date has no age.
- Months vary in length, so the days figure is calculated by borrowing from the previous calendar month, which is the standard way to express age.
Common mistakes
- Reading the years, months and days as decimals. They are separate whole units, so 1 year and 11 months is not 1.11 years.
- Expecting the total days to match years times 365. Leap years add extra days, which is why the totals are computed from the actual dates.
