How the hours worked is worked out
The calculator finds the minutes between your clock in and clock out times, adding 24 hours if the clock out is earlier so night shifts work. It then subtracts your unpaid break and converts the remainder to decimal hours by dividing by 60. For 09:00 to 17:30 the raw span is 510 minutes, and a 30 minute break leaves 480 minutes, which is 8 hours worked.
Pay is the decimal hours multiplied by your hourly rate. 8 hours at 12 pounds an hour is 96 pounds. This is gross pay, the figure before income tax, National Insurance and pension are taken off, and it does not apply any overtime multiplier.

Limitations and common mistakes
Edge cases and limitations
- Pay is gross only and does not deduct tax, National Insurance or pension contributions.
- It does not apply overtime or premium rates, so every minute is paid at the single rate entered.
- A break longer than the shift is floored at zero hours rather than showing negative time.
Common mistakes
- Entering the break in hours instead of minutes. A half hour break is 30, not 0.5.
- Forgetting that the clock uses 24 hour time, so a 5:30 in the afternoon finish must be entered as 17:30.
