Days Between Dates Calculator
Count the number of days between two calendar dates. The calculator takes the difference between the two dates in milliseconds, divides by the length of a day and rounds to a whole number, then also breaks the total into full weeks plus leftover days and an approximate month count.
Order does not matter. The result is the absolute gap between the two dates.

How the days between two dates is worked out
The calculator takes the difference between the two dates in milliseconds, divides by the number of milliseconds in a day (86,400,000) and rounds to the nearest whole number. From 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2025 that gives 364 days, because 2025 has 365 days and the gap excludes the start day itself.
It then breaks the total into full weeks plus leftover days, so 364 days reads as 52 weeks and 0 days. The approximate month figure divides the day total by the average month length of 30.44 days, which smooths over the fact that months range from 28 to 31 days. The order of the dates does not matter because the calculator uses the absolute difference.

Worked examples
A full calendar year
Inputs: Start 1 January 2025, end 31 December 2025
Result: 364 days, which is 52 weeks and 0 days, or about 12.0 months. The gap excludes the start day, so it is one short of 365.
A fortnight
Inputs: Start 1 June 2025, end 15 June 2025
Result: 14 days, which is 2 weeks and 0 days, or about 0.5 months.
Limitations and common mistakes
Edge cases and limitations
- The count excludes the start date, so it gives nights rather than inclusive days. Add one if you need both endpoints counted.
- The month figure is an estimate based on a 30.44 day average and will not match exact calendar months.
- Daylight saving changes are absorbed by the rounding, so the whole day count stays correct across clock changes.
Common mistakes
- Assuming both the first and last day are counted. The result is the gap, not an inclusive span.
- Treating the approximate months as exact. Two dates 31 days apart show as about 1.0 month, not exactly one calendar month.
Frequently asked questions
How many days are between two dates?
Subtract the earlier date from the later one and count whole days. From 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2025 there are 364 days, because 2025 is not a leap year and the start date is not counted twice.
Does the calculator count both the start and end day?
