Total bill (with tip)£67.50
Tip amount£7.50
Per person£16.88

In the UK, tipping is appreciated but not expected — 10-15% at a sit- down restaurant is generous. In the US, 18-20% is standard. Check your bill for any pre-applied service charge before adding more.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax bill?

Convention varies. In the UK it's normal to tip on the total including VAT. In the US, tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is also accepted. This calculator simply takes the bill amount you enter, however you've decided to read the receipt.

Is a service charge the same as a tip?

Not always. A 'service charge' is added to your bill by the restaurant — it may or may not actually go to the staff who served you. If you see one already on the bill, you don't need to add a separate tip unless you want to.

What if some people had more than others?

An even split is the simplest option and the one this calculator gives. If you want to split by what each person ordered, total each person's items separately, then add their share of the tip proportionally.
