How the tip and bill split works
This calculator does two quick jobs at once. It works out the tip as a percentage of the bill, adds it to give the grand total, and then divides that total by the number of people sharing so everyone knows exactly what to put in. It is built for the moment the bill lands and the table needs an answer fast.
The preset buttons set common tip percentages with a single tap, and you can type any custom percentage instead. Everything recalculates instantly, so you can nudge the tip up or down and watch the per-person figure move with it.

Worked examples
A 60 bill at 12.5 percent split four ways
Inputs: Bill 60, tip 12.5 percent, 4 people.
Result: A tip of 7.50, a total bill of 67.50 and 16.88 per person.
Tipping more generously
Inputs: The same 60 bill at 20 percent for 2 people.
Result: A tip of 12, a total of 72 and 36 each, useful for comparing how much a higher percentage changes each share.
Limitations and common mistakes
Edge cases and limitations
- The split is even across everyone. If people ordered very differently, total each person's items separately and add their share of the tip proportionally.
- Results show pennies, so a per-person figure may not divide into round coins. Rounding up slightly is the polite fix.
- The tool takes the bill amount as entered and does not know whether it already includes a service charge.
Common mistakes
- Adding a tip on top of a bill that already has a service charge included, which means tipping twice.
- Tipping at a US level of 18 to 20 percent in the UK, where 10 to 15 percent at a sit-down restaurant is already generous.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax bill?
Convention varies. In the UK it's normal to tip on the total including VAT. In the US, tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is also accepted. This calculator simply takes the bill amount you enter, however you've decided to read the receipt.
Is a service charge the same as a tip?
Not always. A 'service charge' is added to your bill by the restaurant, and it may or may not actually go to the staff who served you. If you see one already on the bill, you don't need to add a separate tip unless you want to.
What if some people had more than others?
An even split is the simplest option and the one this calculator gives. If you want to split by what each person ordered, total each person's items separately, then add their share of the tip proportionally.
