How the hourly to salary conversion works
This calculator turns an hourly wage into the equivalent annual, monthly and weekly pay. It multiplies your hourly rate by the hours you work each week to get weekly pay, multiplies that by the number of weeks you work per year to get annual pay, then divides the annual figure by twelve for a monthly equivalent.
Keeping the weeks-per-year input separate is what makes the result accurate for different working patterns. Someone paid for their holiday uses 52 weeks, while someone who only earns when they work can drop the unpaid weeks to reflect their real income.
How to use the hourly to salary calculator
- Enter your hourly rate of pay.
- Enter the number of hours you work each week.
- Set the number of weeks you work per year, then read the annual, monthly and weekly gross figures.
Worked examples
A full-time rate over a full year
Inputs: Rate 18 an hour, 37.5 hours a week, 52 weeks.
Result: An annual gross of 35,100, a monthly gross of about 2,925 and a weekly gross of 675.
A pattern with unpaid weeks
Inputs: The same rate and hours but only 48 paid weeks.
Result: The annual figure falls to 32,400, since four unpaid weeks are removed from the year.
Limitations and common mistakes
Edge cases and limitations
- These are gross figures before income tax, National Insurance, pension and any other deductions, so your take-home pay will be lower.
- Overtime, bonuses, shift premiums and irregular hours are not modelled, only a steady weekly pattern.
- Monthly pay is the annual figure divided by twelve, which is an average rather than the exact amount in months with more or fewer working days.
Common mistakes
- Using 52 weeks while expecting the result to be net pay. To estimate take-home, run the annual figure through a take-home calculator.
- Forgetting to reduce the weeks for genuinely unpaid time off, which overstates annual earnings.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert an hourly rate to an annual salary?
Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work each week, then multiply by the number of weeks you work per year. At 18 per hour, 37.5 hours a week and 52 weeks, that is 18 times 37.5 times 52, or 35,100 a year before tax.
Should I use 52 weeks or fewer?
Use 52 weeks if you are paid for your holiday, which is normal for salaried and most employed roles. If you are not paid for time off, subtract your unpaid weeks so the annual figure reflects what you actually earn.
Is this before or after tax?
These are gross figures before income tax, National Insurance, pension and any other deductions. Your take home pay will be lower, so use a take home calculator for a net estimate.
