A good BMI for most adults falls between 18.5 and 24.9, the range that the World Health Organization and most national health services call a healthy weight. That is the short answer, and for a quick check it is a reasonable one. The longer and more useful answer is that BMI is a rough screening tool rather than a measure of how healthy you actually are, and knowing what it leaves out is the difference between using the number well and reading too much into it.
What BMI actually measures
BMI, or body mass index, is a simple ratio of weight to height. You take your weight in kilograms and divide it by your height in metres squared, which means you multiply your height by itself first and then divide. The result is a single number that lets a clinician, or a screening programme, sort large numbers of people into weight categories quickly and cheaply, without any special equipment beyond a set of scales and a tape measure.
That simplicity is exactly why BMI became so common, and also why it is so often misunderstood. The formula does not know anything about your body beyond your total mass and your height. It cannot see your muscle, your bone density, your build or where you carry weight. It is, in effect, an estimate of whether your weight is broadly in proportion to your frame, and nothing more. The standard BMI categories
For adults, the widely used bands are straightforward. They are the same figures you will see on most health service websites, and they apply to people of roughly eighteen and over.
- Below 18.5: underweight
- 18.5 to 24.9: healthy weight
- 25 to 29.9: overweight
- 30 and over: obese
These categories are useful as a common language. A clinician saying your BMI is in the overweight range is giving you a shared reference point, not a personal judgement. It is worth remembering that the cut-offs are round thresholds drawn across a continuous scale, so a BMI of 24.8 and a BMI of 25.1 describe almost identical bodies even though they sit on different sides of a line. The category matters far less than the broad picture and the direction your weight is moving over time.
How to read your number with a worked example
Take someone who is 1.75 m tall and weighs 80 kg. Squaring the height gives about 3.06, and dividing 80 by 3.06 gives a BMI of about 26.1. That falls in the overweight band, just over the 25 threshold. On its own this tells you very little about the person. They could be carrying some extra fat, or they could be a regular gym-goer whose muscle adds weight that the formula counts the same as fat. The number is a prompt to look closer, not a conclusion.
Briefly, the same idea works in imperial units, though the formula changes: if you think in pounds and feet, most calculators will convert for you, so you do not need to switch your scales. Whatever units you use, the sensible habit is to treat one reading as a single data point. A BMI that has crept up steadily over a couple of years says more than any single measurement, and a number that sits near a category edge is rarely worth worrying over by itself.
What BMI does not tell you
This is the part that matters most, because it is where BMI is most often over-trusted. The first and biggest gap is that BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat. Muscle is denser than fat, so a fit, muscular person can easily land in the overweight or even obese band despite carrying very little fat. Many athletes and strength trainers fall into this group, which is why BMI is a poor guide for them and why a coach or clinician would look at body composition instead.
The second gap is fat distribution. BMI says nothing about where on your body the weight sits, yet that location is one of the strongest signals of health risk. Fat carried around the abdomen, surrounding the internal organs, is more strongly linked to heart disease and type 2 diabetes than fat carried on the hips and thighs. This is why a waist measurement, or the ratio of your waist to your height, often adds more useful information than BMI alone, and why many clinicians now ask for both.
BMI also varies in meaning across populations. Research has found that people of South Asian, Chinese and some other backgrounds tend to carry more body fat, and face higher health risk, at a lower BMI than white European populations. For this reason several health bodies use lower thresholds for these groups, treating a figure such as 23 rather than 25 as the point where risk begins to climb. If that applies to you, it is well worth asking which cut-offs your clinician uses, because the standard bands may understate your risk.
Who BMI works less well for
Beyond athletes and ethnic differences, there are several groups for whom the adult bands are a weak fit. Older adults often lose muscle and gain fat with age, so a BMI in the healthy range can hide a body composition that is no longer ideal, and a slightly higher BMI in later life is not always a bad sign. During pregnancy, weight gain is expected and healthy, so BMI is not a meaningful measure of body fat for that period. For children and teenagers the adult thresholds do not apply at all; their readings are compared against age and sex growth charts instead, because a growing body changes shape constantly.
None of this makes BMI useless. It remains a quick, cheap and reasonable first screen for most adults, and a steady rise or fall over time is a genuine signal worth noticing.
