Running Pace Calculator
Turn a run distance and finish time into your pace and speed. The calculator divides your total time by the distance to give pace per kilometre and per mile, then works out your average speed in kilometres per hour. Switch the distance between km and miles.
Paces are averaged over the whole run. Real splits vary with hills, wind and how you pace the effort.

How running pace is worked out
Pace is simply your total time divided by the distance you covered. The calculator converts your distance to kilometres, divides your finish time in seconds by it, and formats the result as minutes and seconds per kilometre. It does the same for miles, using the exact conversion that one mile is 1.609344 kilometres.
Average speed in kilometres per hour comes from the same numbers: distance in kilometres divided by time in hours. Pace and speed are two views of the same effort, one in time per distance and the other in distance per time, so a faster run means a smaller pace figure but a larger speed figure.
How to use the running pace calculator
- Enter the distance you ran and toggle the unit between kilometres and miles.
- Enter your finish time split into hours, minutes and seconds.
- Read your pace per kilometre, pace per mile and average speed in km/h.
Worked examples
A 25-minute 5K
Inputs: 5 km in 0 hours, 25 minutes, 0 seconds
Result: Pace of 5:00 per km, 8:03 per mile, and an average speed of 12.0 km/h.
A 10-mile run
Inputs: 10 miles (unit set to miles) in 1 hour, 20 minutes, 0 seconds
Result: That is 16.09 km in 80 minutes: a pace of 4:58 per km, 8:00 per mile, and 12.1 km/h average.
Limitations and common mistakes
Edge cases and limitations
- The pace is averaged across the whole run, so it hides faster and slower splits within it.
- Hills, wind and stops are not modelled; a hilly course feels harder than the flat pace suggests.
- Seconds are rounded to the nearest whole second in the displayed pace.
Common mistakes
- Leaving the unit on kilometres after entering a distance in miles, which throws off every output.
- Typing a finish time of 75 minutes into the minutes box instead of 1 hour 15 minutes; both work, but mixing them up is easy.
Frequently asked questions
How is running pace calculated?
Pace is your total time divided by the distance covered. Running 5 km in 25 minutes is 1,500 seconds over 5 km, which is 300 seconds, or 5 minutes, per kilometre. The same run is about 8 minutes 3 seconds per mile.
How do I convert pace per km to pace per mile?
One mile is 1.609344 kilometres, so a per-mile pace is the per-km pace multiplied by 1.609344. A pace of 5:00 per km becomes roughly 8:03 per mile. This calculator does the conversion for you both ways.
What speed does a 5 minute per km pace equal?
Running each kilometre in 5 minutes means covering 12 kilometres in 60 minutes, so your average speed is 12 km/h. Faster paces give a shorter per-km time and a higher km/h figure.
